| WHAT IS KODOAN? |
| Kodoan is an organization of men, women & children who practice particular forms of Zen, Budo, & Yoga in order to attain enlightenment for the purpose of providing compassion and inspiration to others, as well as, to constantly improve their own bodies, minds, & spirits. Kodoan is a Japanese word meaning “Ancient Ways Temple”. Followers of the Kodoan use the Japanese language for various terms out of respect because two thirds of their practice; Zen & Budo, were imported from Japan (although not “originating” in Japan). Other ancient languages (including Sanskrit) are occasionally used for some terminology but to avoid confusion and keep everyone on the "same page", Japanese is most often used. Kodoan is a religious order whose members are either fully ordained priests (Dojin) with all of the rights and responsibilities associated with the priesthood or are non-ordained members (Shugyojin) who are “in- training” and assigned to a Dojin to learn. The hierarchy of the Kodoan is as follows: KODOAN COUNCIL - Always between 3 and 9 members. - Members are always Dojin (fully ordained priests of the Kodoan). - Responsible for the direction & decisions of the Kodoan. DOJIN - Fully ordained priests of the Kodoan. SHUGYOJIN - Non-ordained members of the Kodoan who are “in-training” and assigned to a Dojin for learning. |
