Interested in learning about the Shakuhachi but not ready to try your hand at a bamboo version? Here’s a great beginner Shakuhachi made out of PVC. These are ubiquitous among Shakuhachi teachers because they have uniform bore dimensions with no surprises! Add to that the carefree and rugged nature of PVC (you can play these in your bathtub – don’t try that with your best bamboo Shakuhachi!) and at an economical price to boot – and these beginner Shakuhachi are hard to beat – but easy to learn! These Beginner Shakuhachi are 1.8 Shaku (about 21 inches in length) and in the key of D minor pentatonic (traditional scale).
